RED Coach
- Hold Open Gym’s for all interested boys in the appropriate grades (JV or varsity). This must be open to ALL St. Al’s students.

- Conduct skill drills(ball handling, shooting, passing etc) conditioning drills and allow for playing time. This is a Summer activity so keep it fun. Be flexible based on the number of players that can attend.
- Send out the dates and time for the entire month and keep it consistent if possible. This allows parents to better support your open gyms. On Sunday of each week send an email to confirm the schedule for the next week.

- Reach out to the fall sports coaches to determine what their schedule is during October. Remember fall sports take priority. With that information, work with the Gym Coordinator to schedule to dates for Red team tryouts. You will want tryouts to be completed prior to October 15 as that is the first day you can practice as a team.
- Follow the process found in the Coaches Meeting document to communicate the information to the parents and create an objective evaluation process.
- Reach out to get information on tournaments you might like to participate in.
October
All Coaches
- Determine what days and times you would like to practice on and communicate that information to the Gym Coordinator.
- Determine which tournaments you would like to play in and firm that up.
- Register the team within the appropriate league and provide them with a roster. Be sure to get the dates the Ryan Center is closed and provide them to the league along with the day and time of your game.
- Start communicating weekly with your new team.
- Work with Assistant Coach to formulate your offensive and defensive strategies that you will focus on this year.
- Work on what drills you will use to develop these strategies and fundamentals.
- Be flexible about practices until fall sports are finished. A fall sport takes the priority.
- Prepare for and schedule your parent meeting for November. Be sure to use the agenda provided by the SAAA.
Red Coach (all)
- The first week of October conduct your tryouts process and communicate the results as indicated in the Coaches Meeting document.
- Once team is selected appoint an Assistant Coach
Red Coach (Varsity)
- Begin planning the Erie tournament (January). You will need to reserve the hotel rooms early. Find a parent to lead this effort.
- Your role is to ensure the JV coach has all the information they need. Please ensure to keep the JV coach in the loop.
White Coach
- Once the Red teams are selected, work with the SAAA Board to determine if more than one White team will be necessary by level and gender. In the event that more than one team is necessary, then an open gym will need to be scheduled so that the kids can be evaluated and broken into seperate teams with equal skills.
4th Grade Coach
- Our team will play in the White League and as such you will need to attend a meeting with other diocese 4th grade coaches to schedule your games. Determine when that meeting is and ensure you don’t miss the meeting as scheduling games becomes very complex if you don’t schedule them at this time.
- Prior to going to this meeting you will need to know what your home game day and time is as well as any Ryan Center black-out dates.
- Here are some tips relating to this meeting
- Get there 30 minutes early. This has become a common practice and coaches arriving on-time have found it hard to schedule games.
- Bring a blank full month schedule for November, December, January and February.
- Put your contact information on strips of paper so that you can quickly give that information to the other coach. Be sure to get their contact information as well, so you can confirm the game 1 week prior.
- Teams you should consider scheduling games with are St. Mary’s, St. Bonaventure, St. Sebastian, St Teresa, Butler Catholic, St. Killian, St. Alexis, St. Greg’s, Christ the Divine Teacher and Holy Sepulcher.
November
All Coaches
- Communicate and conduct practices and games. At this point the team is on the basketball court on average 4-5 days per week.
- Work with coaches from various schools to have non section games. Try to have home and away games with 4-6 strong teams from the south or east.
- Spend most of time on scheduled games, tournaments, scheduling of refs and coordinating gym time are a big part of the job
- Work on practice plans before each practice to determine the most important things to work on based on weaknesses or opportunities shown in previous games and practices.
Red Coach (Varsity)
- Ensure all of the planning and organization is being handled by the Erie tournament coordinator. Ensure that everyone is in the loop which includes girls and boys varsity red team and the cheerleaders. This function is not planned by the SAAA, so the teams participating must ensure that the communication and planning is being completed.
December
All Coaches
- Pretty much the same as November. Need to be creative around the Christmas holiday to work in practices. Be respectful and flexible through the holidays, but find time for practices.
- Since we been going for 2 months we started adding some additional plays on both Offense and Defense and out of bounds. Still try to work more on fundementals (drills) than just plays.
- In January mostly section games.
- Turn in tournament receipts
Red Coach (varsity)
- Turn in section schedule to receive money and to be reimbursed for paying the officials. The non section games the refs will bill St. Al’s. For section games we have to pay the refs. The varsity coach will pay for both JV and Varsity games.

- Purchase a carnation or a rose for each player to be handed to them during the ceremony.
- Purchase balloons so that each 8th grader and their parent can walk through.
- Send out an email with a list of questions that each 8th grader must answer and return to the coach. A list of these questions can be found HERE.
- At the recognition, introduce each player and their parents one at a time. Have them come forward to accept the flower and walk towards the spectators. At this time the coach should be reading the answers to the questions the 8th grader previously provided.
- It is the coaches option to introduce or not introduce the 8th graders from the other team, however the SAAA does NOT reimburse the cost of flowers for the visiting team and therefore does not recommend that they are provided.
