Congratulations JV Girls!
The St. Alphonsus JV girls basketball team won the 2010 Class “A” Diocesan Championship with a victory over St. Mary’s of Glenshaw at Oakland Catholic High School in Pittsburgh.
The Flames took control from the start and by half-time led 17 to 6.
During the second half, the Flames packed the defense and worked on killing the clock. The lead narrowed in the fourth quarter when St. Mary’s hit two three-point shots to bring the game within four, but that was as close as they would get.
Major contributions from the free throw line from various players, contributed to the first diocesan championship since 2003.
The final score was St. Alphonsus, 22, and St. Mary’s, 18.
John Duken, the head coach of the Flames said afterwards, “I could not be any prouder of anyone than I am of these girls. Each played a critical role in achieving this goal. The commitment they made all season long to develop the skills necessary to win the championship was outstanding. I am both lucky and blessed to coach such talented young women”.
Congratulations to the St. Alphonsus JV Girls Red Team and their coaches for a job well done!
Assistant Coaches: Kent Beck and Mike Monberg
Head Coach: John Duken

A New School Year Begins
As the month of August starts, so to does the official start of St. Alphonsus Fall Sports. If your child is registered for participation in a fall sport remember that all the appropriate paperwork must be completed and turned into either the coach or a member of the Athletic Association board prior to tryouts. These forms include the Physician’s Release, Emergency Contact and Parent’s Release. This is to ensure the safety of all of our athletes and to ensure that our coaches are aware of any necessary medical conditions. We look forward to an enjoyable year for all of our athletes filled with growth and achievement both on and off the playing fields.
Look for registration for winter sports (basketball and cheerleading) to occur in September.
Any questions or concerns, please contact a member of the Board.
2009-10 Coaching Applications
If you are a parent or a member of the St. Alphonsus community and are interested in coaching one of our sports teams during the next academic year, please complete an on-line application.
You can read about our sports teams on this page.
Games Canceled
Our basketball coaches have individually decided to cancel all remaining games for this Saturday, January 10.
Unless there is a massive snow or ice storm, the SAAA permits coaches–in concert with the visiting coaches–to determine whether to play or not.
Spring Sports Registration
Please click the registration link above the Flames logo on the top, right of the page for Spring sports.
The registration link in the column to the left is for a different purpose. You will not be able to register your child for Spring sports if you click that link or try to fill-in the password in that box.
All links are working
Per yesterday’s message, a weekend server upgrade destroyed links to our pdf files. Those links have been repaired.
On-line Registration
The on-line registration form for Spring sports is now available. The page is password-protected, and the password will be distributed by the school.
The registration form is also available as a pdf.
Good links gone bad
We upgraded to a new version of our server software over the weekend and recently noticed that our download links aren’t working.
Those links and the Spring Registration form will be available later today. Thanks for your patience.
Even our cool “Flames” graphic is missing if you’re not logged-in.
Welcome to the SAAA’s New Web Site
We still have a bit of work to do, but our new site is functional. Parents can get announcements through RSS feeds for both the web site and the calendar.
We have a new registration module available for Spring Sports, and plan to make further registration improvements in the future.
The site is best viewed with Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Google’s Chrome browser. For some reason, the Opera browser does an extremely poor job rendering our submenu links.
If you have any suggestions for improvements, please let us know.
Eventually, the school’s web site will look like the SAAA’s and the Church’s.
